Heavy Load Film

12 July 2019

Hi it’s Tilz
again,

I have recently had the pleasure of watching the 2008 documentary about the punk band Heavy Load. And I thought I would share my thoughts with you. I LOVED IT! I am officially Heavy Load’s number one fan. For those of you who don’t know, Heavy Load is a punk rock band that consists of five members two of which have a learning difficulty and another who has down syndrome. It’s members met at Southdown housing community for people with mental health issues and or learning difficulties. The documentary captures the band over two years as they make their first album and take their shows to bigger venues. As well as setting up and promoting the charity Staying Up Late. Staying Up Late is a campaign seeking to improve the social lives of people with learning difficulties by calling for more flexible staff shifts and hours. The film is truly eye opening and made me want to start my own band lol. Unfortunately, Heavy Load split in 2012 with one last gig at Trafalgar Square as part of the Paralympics festivities. Sadly, the lead singer Simon Barker passed away on the 10th August 2017. The ninety-minute documentary was directed by Jerry Rothwell. I highly recommend watching this rollercoaster documentary and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
